Headmaster's Address

Dear Parents,

Family Fun Day was a great success by so many measures. Perhaps most importantly it was an occasion that brought our community together. Our boys simply love the day and to watch their excitement and energy as they scamper from stall to ride, brought me and I am sure many others, great pleasure. James and I took the opportunity to introduce William, my grandson, to Glendalough. The colours and movement mesmerised him and a little bit of Russell family history was created. Congratulations to Mrs Claire Whitbread and her remarkable committee.

By Monday evening, the Boyd Egan Hall was ready for the Generations Drinks, the final Centenary-specific event for 2018. Hundreds gathered surrounding the ‘pop up’ Museum and admired the collection of blazers covering the decades. The atmosphere built, as has so regularly been the case throughout the year, as old friendships were rekindled and family and year level connections discovered.

The multi-purpose nature of Boyd Egan was displayed the next evening when staff gathered to farewell Mr Peter McMullen, an esteemed colleague who has been a School Services Officer since 1997. Peter spent his final five years based at Glendalough, where he endeared himself to staff, parents and boys, with his positive and friendly attitude and ability to solve virtually any repair or construction challenge. Time at Heyington and the ELC saw Peter contribute to our College’s wellbeing physically and as a staff member. We wish Peter, his wife Jane, and family, many years enjoying Peter’s retirement.

After celebrating Mass in the Chapel of St Kevin on Wednesday evening, we strolled on a lovely spring evening, back to another version of Boyd Egan – elegant function centre. Mr Daly and I were guests of the Combined Mothers’ Associations for dinner. The food was tasty, the company so convivial and the Boyd Egan Hall was attractively presented by a dedicated group led by Mrs Annie Saville.

Tonight, I am off to the Year 11 Father and Son Dinner in the city. James Russell (SKC 2005) is joining me and so I am so looking forward to dinner and conversation.
