Historic Harms and Commitment to Survivors

As Principal of St Kevin's College, I have met with many survivors and their families since my arrival in 2020. I am grateful for their courage in sharing their stories and insights, helping me understand the past and work toward creating a better future for all our community.

I am deeply saddened to learn that some members of our St Kevin's College community still face significant challenges due to the lasting impact of past harms. In recent years, our College has been working to provide a trauma-informed response to survivors of sexual abuse. While we cannot undo past mistakes, we can acknowledge the harm and the pain caused.

The College remains committed to learning from the past and creating a culture of transparency, accountability, and student safety. We strive to ensure that student voices are actively listened to, heard, and acted upon where necessary.

St Kevin’s College sincerely apologises to survivors and those affected by the harms they suffered while at the College. We continue to work closely with survivors and other stakeholders to develop and inform a comprehensive response to past events.

Supporting Survivors and Our Community

A Commitment to Survivors: We acknowledge the pain caused by past events the the College. We are committed to providing trauma-informed support to survivors and apologise for the harms they have endured. We continue to work with survivors and other key stakeholders to develop an effective response.

Encouraging Acts of Kindness: We encourage all members of the SKC community to reach out to one another, particularly survivors or those who may need a listening ear or some company. Even simple acts of kindness can have a profound impact.

Reach out for Support

We encourage everyone in our community to seek support or check in with someone who might need help. St Kevin's College is committed to offering care to all members of our survivor community, both past and present.

Your wellbeing matters to us.

In some cases, survivors may have needs which surpass the skill sets and treatment offered by the SKC response team. The College and its service providers reserve the right to refer people elsewhere or disengage if they believe that they could not provide suitable care for the person or the care will not be effective or that in the interests and safety of all parties, including psych-social needs, it would be better and safer if the person ceases to engage in any of the services provided. Such decisions will not be made lightly and will need the ratification of the College board. Any such decision made, is final.
