The Design Thinking Challenge Program, in collaboration with Swinburne University, exposes students to university life while challenging them to solve real-world problems using structured design-thinking models. Students work with Swinburne academics, learning how to frame problem statements, map challenges, write design briefs, and develop creative solutions. The culmination of this program is the Innovation Showcase, where students present their prototypes and solutions.
The Social Justice in Action Program takes students beyond the school gates to explore social justice issues firsthand. Through Problem-Based Learning (PBL), they engage in inquiry-driven research on pressing social issues, collaborate on potential solutions, and present their findings at an Expo. Activities such as working at FareShare, visiting The Big Issue classroom, participating in The Big Search, and engaging in a poverty cycle workshop at The Salvos provide powerful learning experiences that deepen students’ understanding while showing the what, why and how of social justice.
The Outprac Program leverages Melbourne’s rich cultural and historical landscape as an extended classroom. Students explore key locations such as the State Library of Victoria, the Arts Centre, the MCG & National Sports Museum, and the Shrine of Remembrance. By documenting their experiences in an ePortfolio, students reflect on their learning and draw meaningful connections between their excursions and their classroom studies.
The adventurous spirit of the Waterford experience is embodied in the RICE program, a series of expeditions to World Heritage sites across Australia. As the jewel in the crown of St Kevin's Outdoor Education Program, the RICE program invites students to camp, hike, canoe, sail, and trek through deserts with their peers. These expeditions are more than just outdoor adventures; they are profound learning experiences that instil values of resilience, leadership, and environmental stewardship.
Two of Waterford's enriching experiences are the celebration of Languages Day, an event that immerses students in the vibrant tapestry of global cultures, and the Waterford Writers Festival, a much-anticipated event where the worlds of literature and creativity converge.
Languages Day encompasses engaging in activities such as Taiko drumming, salsa dancing, playing pétanque, and practicing Tai Chi, where students embark on a journey that not only broadens their cultural horizons but also fosters an appreciation for diversity. This day serves as a cornerstone for promoting global awareness and understanding.
Waterford Writers Festival sees students given the unique opportunity to meet and learn from authors of their favorite books, draw alongside illustrators, and listen to the life stories of renowned personalities, including AFL footballers turned authors. This festival ignites a passion for storytelling and the arts, encouraging students to explore their creative potential.
