Music

Music is an integral part of the academic, cultural and spiritual life of St Kevin’s College. A comprehensive music education is provided by 40 talented Music teachers with students participating in classroom music, instrumental lessons, ensembles and choirs from Prep to Year 12.

The College supports an introductory instrumental program for band and string instruments, with all Glendalough students participating in this program in Year 3 (Strings) or Year 5 (Band and Strings). Heyington students who are new to the College have the option of participating in Year 7.

Following this, students move into individual lessons, supporting their involvement in the wide range of concert bands, string orchestras, choirs and smaller ensembles. More than 120 students complete AMEB examinations each year.

With dedicated teaching spaces at each campus, classroom music is compulsory from Preparatory to Year 7 and then optional to VCE. Glendalough students learn music through a sequential, developmental singing program based on the Kodaly process. At Heyington, students experience music technology in the MIDI laboratory and at the senior levels, develop their individual performance skills in preparation for VCE music and tertiary studies.

The Music Department is supported by the parent’s music support group, the SKC Music Association. These parents provide valuable practical and financial assistance to the Music program.

The Old Collegians Big Band enables our graduated students the opportunity to continue the enjoyment of playing music with friends as they pursue further studies and careers.

There are numerous performance opportunities for our soloists and ensembles. In addition to performances on campus, our students participate in the Victorian School Music Festival, Generations in Jazz and in venues across Melbourne including biennial concerts in Hamer Hall. Music Camps are held each year for Glendalough and Year 7-9 students, developing our musicians both musically and socially.
